Indigo Print Suits

Indigo is one of India's oldest natural dyes. In dabu printing, a mud-resist paste is stamped on the fabric before it is dipped in indigo, so the pattern stays light against deep blue.

Indigo suits every season and every age, and looks crisp at work.

What is Indigo print?

Dabu is a paste of clay, lime, gum and wheat husk printed with wooden blocks. When the cloth is dipped in indigo, the dabu keeps the pattern pale. More dips give a deeper blue.

How it is made

1. Printing dabu. The mud paste is block printed over the design.
2. Drying. It is dusted with sawdust and sun dried.
3. Indigo dipping. The cloth is dipped in indigo; colour develops in the air.
4. Washing. The dabu is washed off to reveal the pattern.

How to care for your suit

• Wash in cold water with a mild detergent, separately for the first two or three washes.
• Do not soak for long or use bleach.
• Dry in the shade; strong sun fades hand printed colours over time.
• Iron on medium heat, from the reverse side for darker prints.

Small variations in colour and alignment are natural in hand block printing. They show the piece was made by hand, and no two are exactly the same.
